In The Black MGMT is the brain child of founder Melissa Bertoncini. After five years of offering freelance bookkeeping and tax preparation services throughout NYC, Melissa realized there was a void in the market for creative people. People who view and interact with money in a different way - and also need to file their taxes! And so, in 2011, In The Black MGMT was born.

It is always the goal of In The Black MGMT to help business owners understand what’s working, what’s not, and how to make things run smoother – and – more profitably. Viewing the world differently is the fuel behind the magic of said creative ventures but it can come at a steep cost; missed deadlines, over budget and lost opportunities to reinvest those savings back into themselves. That’s why for the past 20 years, the team at In The Black MGMT have been the behind-the-scenes support for creative entrepreneurs; offering everything from bookkeeping and tax preparation to budgeting, profitability analysis and fractional CFO/Director of Finance duties.

With offices in NYC and LA and clients globally, In The Black MGMT has extensive experience addressing multi-state and multi-national tax filings, deadlines and compliances both domestically and worldwide. Melissa and her dedicated team of professionals have over a century of experience combined. They speak the languages of money, passion and purpose.

Melissa Bertoncini is the founder of In The Black MGMT and your go-to numbers expert in the art world. With over 20 years of bookkeeping and business management experience—mostly with artists, art galleries, and other creative small businesses—she helps turn clients’ financial chaos into clarity.

While earning her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Stony Brook University (USA) and Sussex University (UK) (respectively) she also pursued her love of art and music; taking classes in music theory and lithography (amongst others). Not only did she love figuring out numbers; how they work and interact together; but she continued to reinforce her profound love for art and being an artist herself.

Her balance of ‘right’ and ‘left’ brain was the perfect storm for the birth of In The Black MGMT. Every creative person needs someone to help them stay organized. Using a mix of real-world experience, a love for art and culture, as well as her educational background, Melissa has helped artists and other creatives the globe over thrive financially and creatively. After over two decades of working with small creative teams, Melissa instinctually knows how to spot good habits, fix the not-so-good ones, and direct people towards more profit with less stress so they can continue pursuing their dreams. 

When she’s off the clock, you’ll find her traveling around the world (and writing about it…you can read more here), catching her favorite band live, chasing pavements with her dog Ruby and seeking out the best vegan slice in town. She also channels her creative side by drawing, painting, writing, designing, you name it - she is probably dabbling in it.
